Cops have vid of susp in beating

- BY KERRY BURKE AND ROCCO PARASCANDOLA

A suspect wanted for battering an Asian man in an unprovoked Manhattan subway station attack was caught on surveillance video jumping a turnstile, wearing a cheery sweater depicting a snowfall while scowling behind a red bandanna.

Cops released the video Thursday and asked the public’s help identifying and tracking down the suspect in the possible hate crime. The Tuesday night beatdown is the latest in a string of attacks against Asian New Yorkers.

Teoh Ming was entering the East Broadway subway station near Rutgers St. when his attacker (photo) stormed up and punched him, knocking him to the ground about 8:50 p.m.

Ming, a 56-year-old Malaysian immigrant of Chinese descent, has lived in the city for more than 20 years.

“This is something I can’t understand,” Ming told the Daily News Wednesday. “I don’t know what happened. I was going down the steps and he was coming up.”

Ming was headed home to Brooklyn from his Chinatown construction job when he was assaulted,

“He hit me three times,” he added, pointing to his black left eye and his cut lip. “And the rest, I don’t remember anything after that. I fell down and I don’t know what happened next.”

Ming doesn’t know if it was a hate crime.

“I’m an Asian man in Chinatown and he attacked me,” the distraught victim said. “I don’t know why he wanted to punch me. He didn’t say anything.”

The attack is under investigation by the NYPD’s hate crime task force. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

The assault comes during a wave of anti-Asian violence advocates say is fueled by racism and ignorance about the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 200 New Yorkers rallied in Foley Square on Saturday to denounce the violence, which included an incident at the square near Manhattan Federal Court on Thursday where a stranger stabbed a 36-year-old Asian man in the back.
