“Godzilla vs. Kong” didn’t monkey around at the box office.

The epic film featuring a showdown between two cinematic titans made a whopping $48.5 million at domestic theaters between its release last Wednesday and Sunday, giving it the most prolific North American opening of any movie during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That eye-popping five-day total included an estimated $32.2 million between Friday and Sunday to lead the weekend box office.

Featuring a star-powered cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Eiza González, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry, “Godzilla vs. Kong” (photo bottom) also debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on the same day it hit theaters in North America.

Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the movie had already been dominating overseas after opening days earlier in other countries. It made nearly $122 million internationally last weekend, then added another $120 million between April 2-4.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” has now roared to a box-office haul of $285.4 million between all markets.

“Moviegoers have been waiting for an event film like ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ to arrive on the big screen and the numbers don’t lie — it’s clear that wherever audiences are ready to safely return to the theater, they have, and we’re thrilled with the results,” said Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein.

Movie theaters reopened in both New York City and Los Angeles last month after being shuttered since March 2020 due to pandemic.

Before this weekend, “Wonder Woman 1984,” which came out in December, held the high mark for biggest three-day opening in North America during the pandemic with $16.7 million.

The horror film “The Unholy” finished second at the domestic box office between April 2-4 by debuting with $3.2 million, according to Variety, with the Bob Odenkirk-led action film “Nobody” coming in third after making $3 million in its second weekend.

“Nobody” led the weekend box office last week when it made $6.7 million.
