Bad omen Not so simple
Manhattan: As the plodding, overpaid, long-term-contracted, defensively challenged Yankees play on to probably another non-championship year, can someone ask Hal Steinbrenner whatever became of his review of the late Kate Smith’s “God Bless America” suspension from a few years back (“Yankees dump Kate Smith’s ‘God Bless America’ from rotation over singer’s racist songs,” April 18, 2019)? A national icon charged with racism caused Hal to fear the loss of a few fannies in the seats so he took the immoral way out — and compounded it by avoiding a decision. “The Curse of the Bambino” meant no Red Sox championship for 85 years, and the “Curse of the Billy Goat” meant no championship for the Cubs for 107 years. Hey Hal, get ready for the “Curse of the Kate.”

Sayville, L.I.: Mitch McConnell is some piece of work, packing the court with right-wing justices who rule that a corporation has the same rights as a citizen. Now he says corporations should stay out of politics. Should all citizens stay out of politics, too? Seems like that’s what they want — don’t even bother trying to vote. He hits a new low every day.

Manhattan: Re DMX and Prince Philip: May they both rest in peace. Human beings are complex creatures and multifaceted in both their attributes and shortcomings. That truism is true of both DMX and Prince Phillip. For Voicers to tear down the prince’s legacy at the expense of enhancing that of DMX is just plain wrongheaded. They both had challenges in life. And both had great successes. But only one had an extensive criminal record and died tragically of a drug overdose. Enough of blindness to reality and the cancel culture epidemic! Ephraim Savitt
