Stringer backed by Teamsters
Less than a week after sexual abuse allegations rocked Comptroller Scott Stringer’s mayoral bid — causing supporters to retract their endorsements en masse — Stringer picked up support from a union that represents 24,000 workers.
The union, Teamsters Local 237, announced its backing Monday afternoon, just days after big-name endorsers like the Working Families Party and Rep. Adriano Espaillat rescinded their stamps of approval.
“We have absolutely no doubt that Scott Stringer is ready to lead New York City on day one as mayor, and we have absolutely no doubt about what he will do when he gets to City Hall,” the local’s president, Greg Floyd, said in a written statement. “He will stand up for frontline workers. He will make desperately needed investments in our critical public institutions, like our public housing and public hospitals. And he will bring back New York City stronger and fairer than ever.”
Floyd’s support served as a striking counterpoint amid a mass exodus of support for Stringer on the heels of accusations from lobbyist Jean Kim that he made unwanted sexual advances. Kim claimed on Wednesday that Stringer (inset) groped her and pressured her to have sex with him 20 years ago. Stringer has denied the allegations and has attempted to undercut Kim’s story.
Since Kim dropped the bombshell last week, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) and Democratic state Sens. Jessica Ramos, Alessandra Biaggi and Yuh-line Niou, among others, have all rescinded their endorsements of the Manhattan Democrat.
When asked about his union’s support in the face of so many others abandoning Stringer, Floyd said he has known him for years and “has never seen any traits like this.”
“I’ve never heard anybody say something like this about him,” Floyd said.
He declined to speculate about Kim’s claims, but said that from his perspective, her story is “not adding up,” given the fact that she donated to Stringer after the alleged incidents.
“All I know is what I’m putting together on my own,” he said. “There are certain elements that are messy.”
