Mayoral candidates Yang and McGuire trade jabs

- BY MICHAEL GARTLAND

New York City mayoral candidate Ray McGuire took aim Monday at frontrunner rival Andrew Yang, saying he’s “never run anything, other than his mouth.”

In an interview with the Daily News editorial board Monday, McGuire (photo), a former Citi exec who’s been trailing in recent polls, made his case to become New York City’s next mayor, claiming he’s the only candidate who can negotiate on a corporate level and with community interests like NYCHA.

“I can go and sit and negotiate with whomever,” he said. “New Yorkers recognize that I’m not running on a social agenda. I’m not running on identity politics. I’m not running on cancel culture. I’m running because I happen to have the best-lived experiences.

“I know what it’s like for most New Yorkers not to have. I have the best professional experiences.

I have run, led and managed businesses larger than all of the rest of them.”

Without explicitly naming names, McGuire then went after Yang, who has taken heat recently for what critics say is a spotty business record.

“You take somebody who’s actually, one, never done anything, never run anything, other than his mouth, or somebody who says, ‘I don’t know how to manage, I’m going to get a team to manage’ — you look at that track record, and you look at mine. I got receipts,” he said. “It will be a travesty if somebody’s first job is running New York City.”

Yang’s campaign didn’t take long to respond.

“The only time Ray McGuire ever cared about government was when Citi needed a $45 billion bailout,” said campaign spokeswoman Alyssa Cass.

“While Ray was working for the Koch brothers, Andrew Yang was fighting to put money in the hands of working families.”
