Man shot dead near Bx. school

A man was fatally shot near a Bronx middle school, police said Thursday.

Robert Smith was blasted in the head and back near Dawson St. and Prospect Ave. in Longwood about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, cops said.

The shooting was down the block from Middle School 302, the Luisa Dessus Cruz school.

Witnesses told cops Smith, 40, was walking down the street when a man in a red-hooded sweatshirt crept up behind him and shot him, authorities said. The killer ran off and had not been caught.

Smith was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he died a short time later.

He lived in Williamsbridge, about 7 miles from where he was shot.
