Cop unions: Weprin for comptroller
Queens Assemblyman David Weprin locked down support from four police unions Tuesday in his bid for comptroller as the city continues to wrestle with a surge in gun violence.
Weprin, who served on the City Council for eight years before going to the Assembly, previously stated he opposed defunding the NYPD and is against reducing the department’s headcount — but he didn’t touch on the surge in violence that’s now racking the city in accepting the endorsements from the unions, which represent NYPD detectives, sergeants, lieutenants and captains.
Instead, he focused on how, if elected as comptroller, he’d be responsible for overseeing their pension funds.
“As someone running to be the chief fiduciary of the New York City pension system — which includes thousands of New York’s Finest — I am honored to earn the endorsement of these four law enforcement associations,” he said. “Now is the time for experienced and trusted financial knowledge in the office of the city comptroller — and that is what I intend to bring to the job.”
Weprin is facing off against Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Councilman Brad Lander, state Sens. Brian Benjamin and Kevin Parker, as well as former Marine Zach Iscol and journalist Michelle Caruso-Cabrera.
