Taking heat after he backs Israelis

- Chris Sommerfeldt

A Muslim community group in Queens disinvited Andrew Yang from a Ramadan event on Tuesday, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez harangued him over social media amid mounting outrage over the mayoral hopeful’s public support for Israel’s deadly air strikes on Palestinians this week.

Yang, the front-runner in the crowded race to replace Mayor de Blasio, was supposed to help distribute groceries to Muslim families in need at the Astoria Welfare Society on Tuesday afternoon, but he told reporters that event organizers informed him last-minute that it “would be better” if he did not attend. “And we’re happy to abide by their wishes,” Yang said, adding that he believes the organizers asked him to stay away over a Monday tweet in which he said he’s “standing with the people of Israel” after its military conducted air strikes that left at least 28 Palestinians dead — including nine children and a woman.
