Colo. mass killer’s act of revenge

- BY JOSEPH WILKINSON

The gunman who fatally shot six people before killing himself at a Colorado family’s birthday celebration was angry he wasn’t invited, police said Tuesday.

Teodoro Macias, 28, was enraged his girlfriend didn’t want him at the Saturday celebration in Colorado Springs, and went on rampage, killing her and five adult relatives, police said at a press conference.

“At the core of this horrendous act is domestic violence,” Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said, adding that Macias “displayed power and control issues” in the relationship.

Macias (inset) was dating Sandra Ibarra, 28, for about a year before he killed her, police said. The other five victims were identified Tuesday as: Jose Ibarra, 26, Sandra’s brother; Mayra Ibarra Perez, 33, Sandra’s sister; Melvin Perez, 30, Mayra’s husband; Jose Gutierrez, 21, Melvin’s brother, and Joanna Cruz, 52, Jose and Melvin’s mother.

The families gathered Saturday night to celebrate birthdays for Melvin Perez, Joanna Cruz and another relative, 28-year-old Nubia Marquez, who left the party about two hours before the rampage.

Marquez identified her family members to The Gazette before police officially released their names Tuesday.

Three children were in the residence at the time of the shooting, but they were not physically injured, police said.

Evidence showed Macias had been trying to isolate Sandra Ibarra from her family prior to the shooting, cops said.

About a week before the deadly confrontation, there was “some type of conflict” between Macias and the family at a different gathering, police said.

Cops received no reports of physical domestic violence against Sandra Ibarra in the past year, and were looking for evidence of any unreported violence, investigator Joe Frabbiele said.

It’s unclear how Macias obtained the Smith & Wesson 9-mm. pistol used to kill the six family members, police said. The only recorded purchase of the weapon was by a different person in 2014 at a local gun store; there’s no record of Macias taking ownership. Cops said it was never reported stolen.
