Carmel, N.Y.: This is National Police Week, a time to show appreciation to our law enforcement officers across America. These are disturbing times for them as they engage in one of the most difficult professions, often dealing with extraordinarily unpredictable events, and go above and beyond comprehension when dealing with the human conditions in our society. Please thank them and recognize that 800,000 officers serve our great nation 24/7 in many different capacities. May 15 was designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day by President John F. Kennedy. The names of 700 NYPD officers who made the ultimate sacrifice are engraved on the monument in Battery Park. I hope New Yorkers will visit this special spot, appropriately in view of the Lady in the Harbor, the statue that honors our freedoms.
