An unhinged man is shot by S.I. cops

- Thomas Tracy

Police officers shot and wounded an unhinged man who swung a large metal pipe at them during a Staten Island standoff, authorities said Saturday.

A pair of cops from the 122nd Precinct were called to the 45-yearold man’s apartment on Malden Place in Oakwood Heights around 10:30 p.m. for a man acting erratically, according to NYPD Deputy Chief Charles McEvoy.

The officers managed to persuade the man to go with them to a waiting ambulance to get checked out. But “he left the ambulance, pushing past the officers and running, retreating back to his residence,” the chief said.

The two cops followed him back to his apartment, “where he was able to pick up a 2½-foot metal pipe, which he began swinging at the officers,” said McEvoy.

As the man swung at the cops, one of the officers fired his weapon, hitting him in the torso, police said.

EMS took the man to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he underwent surgery and was expected to survive.

The two officers were also taken to Staten Island University Hospital North for observation, police said.

The NYPD has been trying to change course after years of headlines about police responding to mental health crises with deadly force.

A new program aimed at keeping cops from responding to 911 mental health calls began in Harlem in June and is expected to expand.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced last month that officers will be given additional training on deescalating situations with mentally ill people who are unarmed or carrying a weapon other than a firearm.
