Biles back for one last try on beam

Simone Biles is going for one last gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

After sitting out the last four events to focus on her mental health, the 24-year-old gymnast will make it back to the floor for her balance beam routine today.

“We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!!” USA Gymnastics announced early Monday morning. “Can’t wait to watch you both!”

Biles came into the Tokyo Games as one of Team USA’s shining stars, but a case of the “twisties” left her unable to perform in the team finals, then the individual events for floor, uneven bars and vault.

The beam routine typically involves far fewer twisting elements than other routines, even including Biles’ eponymous dismount, the double-twisting double tuck.

Biles won a bronze on beam at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and is a three-time world champion in that event.

Lee, meanwhile, became the first Hmong American gymnast to earn a gold medal when she won the women’s individual all-around, then followed it up with a bronze on bars Sunday.

Despite sitting out the events, Biles has been on the sidelines for almost all of the competition, cheering on her teammates.

She went into extensive detail about “the twisties” last week, explaining she lost the confidence of knowing what her body was going to do in midair. It’s not the first time Biles dealt with the problem, though she did say the issues followed her to both uneven bars and beam.

Previous bouts with the phenomenon were limited to floor exercise and vault, where more twisting elements are required.

“I’m really proud of her for coming back,” said American Jade Carey, who won gold on floor exercise Monday. “She’s been through a lot this Olympics so I’m really proud and happy to see her going after beam.”
