Guard goes batty, stops car thieves
A crew of crooks trying to steal cars from a Bronx dealership bashed a bat-wielding security guard with a crowbar, police said Tuesday.
The crew cut through the security gate at 26 Motors Corp. at Boston Road and Dyre Ave. in Eastchester shortly after 4 a.m. on Aug. 5, authorities said.
Wearing glovess and hoodies, the robbers smashed through a glass window and then broke down a basement door that led to the manager’s office, where vehicle keys were kept, cops said.
Surveillance video released by cops shows one crook in a black Kappa hoodie use a large crowbar to break open a drawer containing dozens of car keys. The crew then starts snatching keys, appearing to read the tags as they pocket them.
One crook is seen in a green hoodie, another wore a black hoodie with the film poster of “Scarface” with Al Pacino on its front, the footage shows.
The crew was confronted by a 33-yearold security guard with a bat, police said. One of the robbers struck the guard with the crowbar as the gang fled.
The crooks escaped in their own vehicles with several keys but failed to steal a single automobile, cops said.
The guard was taken to Montefiore Medical Center’s North Division in stable condition with bruises to his left arm, authorities said.
Cops are asking the public’s help identifying the robbers and tracking them down.
