Mailbag Dear Gridlock Sam,

Please inform your reading public of the proper procedures of making a left turn off a two-way street (whether controlled or not). Too many people pull into the intersection, and start their turn immediately, pulling into the oncoming lane. This is 1. Extremely dangerous (head on collision risk), 2. Counter opposed to smooth traffic flow (blocking 1 lane of oncoming traffic); 3. Just downright stupid and discourteous.

Dear Erik,

You did a good job explaining it. I would add, when making a left turn while waiting for opposing traffic, to keep your wheel straight; if your wheels are turned and you are rear-ended you’ll be pushed into oncoming traffic.
