Brooklyn College Ranks #1 for Ethnic Diversity by U.S. News & World Report for Fourth Straight Year
For the fourth straight year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Brooklyn College as the most ethnically diverse university among campuses in the North Region. The college was also ranked 9th for economic diversity and 11th for supporting social mobility in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings published in early September 2021. Brooklyn College was also recognized as the 18th best public university in the North Region and the 70th best university regionally. Now in its 37th year, the U.S. News & World Report rankings evaluate more than 1,400 colleges and universities on up to 17 measures of academic quality.
Brooklyn College welcomes students from 142 countries who speak more than 94 languages. In addition to this national recognition for its diverse student body, the college is widely known for its offer of an excellent education at an affordable tuition and for serving as an important anchor institution within the Borough of Brooklyn and greater New York City for more than 90 years.
With approximately 17,000 students in more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, education, and business, the college is renowned for its rigorous academics, award-winning faculty, distinguished alumni, and community impact. Part of the City University of New York (CUNY), Brooklyn College offers a vibrant and supportive student experience on a beautifully landscaped 35acre campus in the borough’s Midwood neighborhood.
“We are proud to offer a high-quality and affordable education to an incredibly rich and diverse student body,” said President Michelle J. Anderson. “These strong rankings are a testament to the hard work of our incredibly talented students, staff, and faculty.”
Celebrating Diverse Voices and Supporting Immigrant Students
In 2017, President Anderson launched the school’s “We Stand Against Hate” initiative that features lectures, workshops, concerts, programs, and events that reflect the college’s ongoing commitment to elevating dialogue, enhancing understanding and compassion, and celebrating the voices that make up the diverse campus community. To support immigrant students, Brooklyn College established the Immigrant Student Success Office (ISSO) in 2019. ISSO is committed to helping immigrant and first-generation students graduate, and its comprehensive offerings include faculty mentorship, financial aid advisement, free legal services with assistance from CUNY Citizenship Now!, and personalized counseling.
Brooklyn College Listed as Top College in the U.S. by The Princeton Review
These latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report follow Brooklyn College being included in The Princeton Review’s “Best 387 Colleges” Guide for 2022, where it was listed among only approximately 14% of America’s 2,700 four-year institutions that are profiled in the book. The Princeton Review also named Brooklyn College to its “Great Race/Class Interaction” list—along with only 18 others nationwide—and was a selection for the “Best Northeastern” colleges.
Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College Named Top Film School by The Hollywood Reporter
The Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College was recently named a top-25 film school by The Hollywood Reporter as well as one of the best film schools in North America by MovieMaker Magazine.
“This recognition by these film industry leaders is a testament to the incredible work being done by our students,” says Feirstein’s executive director, Richard Gladstein. “Feirstein has assembled a faculty and staff with incredible talents and experience who are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of diverse storytellers right here in Brooklyn. With tuition being one-third of the cost of other leading film schools, the access Feirstein offers— along with the ability to create at Steiner Studios—is an educational filmmaking experience that is second to none.”
Marking the completion of his first year at Feirstein this summer, Gladstein—a two-time Academy Award–nominated film producer—has ushered in a renewed energy by bringing his industry expertise and connections to the school (located at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard) and its students through mentorships and a highly accomplished advisory board.
