The decomposing corpse of a 68-year-old woman was found wrapped in garbage bags inside the Queens apartment she shared with her daughter, police said Thursday.

It was not yet clear if the mother, Cynthia Jones, was a victim of foul play or if her 45-year-old daughter simply failed to notify authorities she died of natural causes.

A neighbor said Jones had lived there several decades, and had raised two daughters in the apartment, one of whom got married and moved to North Carolina.

“She was here the longest,” the neighbor said of Jones. “She was here before I moved in, and I’ve been here 45 years.”

The gruesome discovery was made after the landlord of their building on 102nd St. near 35th Ave. in North Corona called 911 at 6:38 p.m. Wednesday to report leaking water coming from the victim’s apartment.

“I called the super because the whole ceiling fell,” she said. “He called the Fire Department because they wouldn’t let him in.”

Inside the apartment, police found the daughter in the shower with her mother dead on the living room floor.

Police said the daughter was disoriented and her mother was severely decomposed and wrapped in several black garbage bags.

The neighbor said the daughter may have some mental problems. “It’s sad,” the neighbor said. The daughter was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for psychiatric observation.

A black cat roamed Jones’ apartment amid the clutter of boxes and trash as cops investigated Thursday.

The city medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the mother’s cause of death.

The neighbor said the family members kept to themselves, although the mother would occasionally speak.

“If you saw her in the hallways she would say hello and keep going,” the neighbor said. “My heart goes out to them because that could have been me. I could have had a heart attack and died by myself. My heart hurts for her.”
