performance Saturday night – 12 points in 20 minutes on 4-of-8 shooting – was encouraging. Knox was on fire to end the first half, but then sat until late in the third quarter and never scored again.

“To see the first one go in, it was huge,” said Knox, who only played a couple minutes in the preseason opener. “I always tell my teammates when I see the first one go in, I feel pretty good after that. …My shot felt good and overall I felt my game was a lot better.”

CENTER OF ATTENTION

The Knicks position in flux remains center. Projected starter Nerlens Noel sat for the second straight game because of a sore knee, leaving Taj Gibson as the starter. Jericho Sims, the rookie, again filled the role nicely as the backup Saturday but clearly needs a better grasp of defensive positioning. Sims is limited offensively but plays at 150 mph and is in top physical condition.

Mitchell Robinson, who probably has the highest ceiling of all the centers, has the height advantage and is a better rim protector than Sims, but gained pounds since breaking his foot and claims it’s from the weight room. He hasn’t played in six months and was running conditioning drills after Saturday morning’s shootaround at Georgetown. He needs to play in a contract year, if only because the Knicks require some evidence to offer a contract – or not offer one. Robinson also needs to get in shape.

NOBODY SEES THE WIZ

It was the first game of the season in Capitol One Arena and it was about 80% empty. A good chunk were Knicks fans. For some reason, the Wizards don’t have much of a following in D.C. Maybe it’s because they haven’t reached a conference final since 1979.
