Historical accuracy

Manhattan: Re the presentation of the murder of Emmett Till as presented in the recent series “Women of the Movement” (“History, but still happening,” Jan. 6): The use of color as opposed to the more appropriate black-and-white film then in vogue detracted greatly from the grave subject matter covered. The utterance of the great-uncle, Moses Wright, testifying in a pivotal court moment, was butchered when the prosecutor asked him to point out a defendant. He stood up, pointed directly at him and said, “There he is.” The true words he spoke, as noted by every historical record as well as original newsreel coverage, distinctly recorded him as saying, “Thar he.” While I am willing to concede the made-for-TV movie captured the essence of those times, that includes not just poverty but illiteracy.
