Zombie-ravaged Big Apple setting for latest ‘Walking Dead’ spinoff

The zombie apocalypse is headed for the Big Apple.

“The Walking Dead” characters Maggie and Negan, played by Lauren Cohan (above right) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (above left), will get a spinoff show called “Isle of the Dead,” set to premiere next year, AMC announced Monday.

The six-episode first season will see Maggie and Negan “traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland,” the network said.

“The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made the city their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror,” reads AMC’s description of the show.

Despite his brutal introduction in the season 6 finale of “The Walking Dead,” the bat-wielding Negan found allies, if not friends, among the resilient survivors. But it remains to be seen how viewers will find Negan and Maggie together in the spinoff after he bashed her husband, Glen, to death on “Walking Dead.”

“I’m delighted that Negan and Maggie’s journey continues,” Morgan said in a statement. “It’s been such a ride walking in Negan’s shoes. I’m beyond excited to continue his journey in New York City with Lauren.”

“Isle of the Dead” is the fifth spinoff from the original series, following “Fear the Walking Dead,” “World Beyond” and the anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead,” which is set to premiere this year. An untitled spinoff starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride was greenlit in September 2020. Chris Hardwick also hosts the aftershow, “Talking Dead.”
