It’s time to end this progressive experiment
San Francisco: On June 7, San Francisco voters will determine the fate of embattled district attorney Chesa Boudin (“Two cop killers and their progressive progeny,” op-ed, May 10). The nation’s eyes are fixed on our ultra-liberal city, intent on knowing about a future ripple effect, a backlash against “progressive” DAs in their own hometowns. In 2019, while campaigning alongside three well-qualified prosecutors, Boudin bragged that he was the sole candidate with no actual prosecutorial experience. He never tried a criminal case to conviction and sentencing. He was utterly unqualified.
But this is San Francisco, a city where cults form and trends come and go. Chesa Boudin did win the election, albeit barely. Now, Boudin’s ineptitude for the past two and a half years has earned him a well-deserved recall.
A school janitor does not get promoted to principal. The baggage handler is not qualified to fly an aircraft. The undertaker is dangerous as a chief surgeon. And Chesa Boudin, a minimally-experienced criminal defense attorney installed as San Francisco’s chief prosecutor, has been an outright disaster. Richie Greenberg, founder

Patterson, N.Y.: To paraphrase Eliza Doolittle’s words and Lerner and Loewe’s intent: Words! Words! Words! I’m so sick of words! I get words all day through, first from him, now from you! Is that all the elected can do? My heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to the victims and families of gun violence all over our gun-controlled country.

Shoe on the other foot
Copake, N.Y.: It didn’t take long for GOP gubernatorial hopefuls Lee Zeldin and Harry Wilson to feature images of the NYC subway shooting, which left 10 people wounded, in their campaign ads. In these ads, each candidate vows to end cashless bail, even though Frank James, the 62-year-old African-American accused of the attack, wasn’t out on bail — cashless or otherwise. What I doubt we will see in any future Zeldin or Wilson ads are images of the Buffalo supermarket shooting that left 10 dead and three wounded, 11 of whom were African-Americans. This crime, carried out by 18-year-old Payton Gendron, a self-described fascist, white supremacist and anti-Semite, targeted the majority Black community because he was deeply concerned by the “great replacement” of white Americans by Blacks, immigrants and Jews. So what or who created that sort of “atmosphere”? Joseph Cannisi
Enough already
Manhattan: Thoughts and prayers and teddy bears, sadness and dismay. Memorial sites and sympathy, what more can I say? Assault weapons must be banned; the time is now to stop the talk. They kill and maim and threaten
us and leave outlines drawn in chalk. Everyone is crying now. saying this has to end. But wait a week...they’ll all forget. And we’ll do it all again. Phoebe Celentano
Get real
Warwick, R.I.: The current epidemic of active shooter incidents, especially the horrific grocery store incident in Buffalo with 10 innocent fatalities, begs for a well-informed public means to escape from these deadly occurrences. These soft targets include: malls, retail, medical, hospitality, religious, entertainment and sports venues. First management and staff must be trained in a safe means to guide all visitors, attendees and shoppers from these locations. These risks could be in the form of a fire, smoke bombs, active shooter, lost of power at night or terrorist attack. At the very beginning of these incidents, panic sets in and disorientation is prevalent. The need is to safely clear the premise or shelter in place so first responders can prevail. The simplest need is to inform all when entering any public venue of all the safety means that they provide. It can be conveyed by public announcements of all emergency exits, printed on posted placards, hand out flyers or QR codes posted throughout the premise. The safety of all who enter your premises is the most important service you can provide. Bob Sweeney
An army of volunteers
Stoughton, Mass.: Imagine if there had been a customer or three or four in Buffalo who had a “Saturday Night Special” handgun and could have assisted the store security guard. Since 1855, when the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not require public servants to protect anyone, all Americans have known they are expected to protect themselves. There is no “public safety” in the U.S.A.

Love others
Beverly Hills, Calif.: The white American boy Payton Gendron is a sick, demented 18-year-old motivated by racism and hate for Black Americans. It would be a very boring America if we didn’t have a variety of different people. We have a mixed culture of dance, songs, drama and comedy acts, etc. Jesus said to love all. He said that for a reason because he knew the future of America and the world as it is today. We don’t need an epidemic of hate toward one another. It must be stopped now by showing respect and consideration for all. Every parent should teach this to their children at a young age so they may grow up being full of love for others. Margo Kent

Jericho, L.I.: Have you seen the condition of Home Depot and their parking lot on Jericho Turnpike? We are their neighbor and have been complaining for years about it to the Town of Oyster Bay and the fire marshal. Our complaints fall on deaf ears. They are in violation of so many codes, rules and regulations — it is obscene! The way in which the property is maintained is a disgrace. The parking lot has turned into a pockmark-ridden garden center, tool rental business and long-term truck parking facility. Building and garden materials are stacked up high on all sides of the building. It looks awful and is dangerous and illegal permanent structures have been added. How do they manage to get away with it and why doesn’t anyone care? Something bad is going to happen there and nobody seems to care. If you are looking for a story perhaps this might be a good one. Brooklyn: Voicer Bob Cavaliere says he can “write the book” on the failings of renewable energy. He states the obvious that sometimes the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine, but he has evidently never heard of battery storage. Tesla has already deployed utility-scale batteries in Texas and elsewhere to reliably back up wind energy. He says that mining the minerals needed for wind turbines harms the Earth. Well, how about drilling for oil and fracking for gas? Advocates for renewables are not counting on miracles or fairy dust to power our civilization. We want the least bad way to do it. Costs for operating heat pumps will come down, while the costs from the floods, fires and other extreme weather events caused by climate change — largely caused from burning fossil fuels — will only increase. These costs are even now being passed along to the affected homeowners, farmers, businesses and government. There is no long-term alternative to getting off coal, oil and gas. If he doesn’t believe that, Mr. Cavaliere hasn’t even read the book.

If it bleeds...
West New York, N.J.: I am sick of the Daily News reporting in its first five pages what you consider news, namely who got murdered. Is that the only mindset you have? I think giving coverage of these events only encourages the least of us. Have a small box with a number in it if you have to report on such bloodshed. But then devote those pages to good, uplifting human interest stories. You are going down the rabbit hole with those needing to see themselves “making news.”
