Rep. backs Dem official vs. assemblywoman in primary

New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries on Monday endorsed Dionne Brown-Jordan’s primary bid to topple Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus in the 46th District, adding his powerful voice to a heated Democratic race.

Brown-Jordan (inset left), the assistant treasurer for the Brooklyn Democratic Party, has served as a district leader for the Brooklyn district — which spans from Bay Ridge to Brighton Beach — for about two years.

Frontus has represented the 46th District in the Assembly since 2018 and is aligned with the progressive New Kings Democrats.

She has sniped at Brown-Jordan over eyebrow-raising Democratic Party county committee appointments — including of a dead woman, and living residents who claimed ignorance of their appointments — that were submitted by the candidate in her role with the Brooklyn Democrats.

Brown-Jordan has claimed she received consent from the woman, Alfreida Davis, before she died in 2020, though the appointment form was filed a month after the death.

In a statement, Jeffries (inset right) described Brown-Jordan as an “outstanding example of community leadership” who has a “progressive vision for Brooklyn.”

“She’s dedicated her entire life to public service, and she will continue to be a tremendous advocate for this district in Albany,” said the statement.

The backing from Jeffries, the No. 5 House Democrat, may offer Brown-Jordan a boost with early voting underway ahead of Primary Day on June 28.

Brown-Jordan said in a statement that she was “humbled and honored” to receive the endorsement, and that she shares Jeffries’ “vision” for Brooklyn.

Jeffries also endorsed Frontus’ primary opponent in 2018, Ethan Lustig-Elgrably, who lost by less than 1 percentage point.

Frontus, who said she expects to be endorsed by Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) in the coming days, charged Monday that Jeffries is “part of the Coney Island machine.”

“I’ve won one primary and two generals without their help, and thankfully the people will decide if I win my next race,” Frontus said.
