Brooklyn: Re “Top 10 recidivists love bail reform” (Aug. 4): I’ve been listening to this debate about bail reform for years and both sides have it wrong. Someone who has pleaded guilty to dozens of crimes does not belong in jail. They belong in prison. Bail just keeps repeat offenders in jail for a few weeks until they take the plea bargain offered by the district attorney. What good does that do? If the DA puts these career criminals on trial as repeat offenders, a judge could send that person to prison for years. Instead, the DA is looking to give career criminals a bargain. Why? Because it’s easy. Our criminal justice system is run by ambitious criminals and lazy prosecutors. Bail won’t change that and it won’t make our streets any safer.
