Warwick, R.I.: Again, we are faced with a deadly mass-casualty incident from an active shooter in Monterey Park, Calif. What safety regulations does your state’s fire code provide for safe exit from any hazardous incident? They should inform all occupants of the locations of emergency exits and also the location of hardened areas for sheltering in place. These safety methods can be given by voice announcements, printed handouts on advertising brochures or church bulletins or on posted QR codes. This method can be used nationwide as a safety protocol for all public assembly facilities, including shopping centers, entertainment venues, sports facilities, offices, retail, fast food and religious facilities. A few states have adopted similar regulations, yet more is needed. We have a moral obligation to give public guidance for safe exiting from a hazardous incident.
