In reality, Fantasy season was one big blast

-

We proudly present the second annual Fantasy Billboard Awards, Part II. The envelopes, please.

BREECE HALL Ickey Woods Rookie of the Year Award:

Elbert “Ickey” Woods was a second-round pick of the Bengals in 1988. He was an instant star, with 1,234 combined yards and 18 touchdowns. He is best remembered for the “Ickey Shuffle,”a side-to-side TD dance that ended with a hop and a spiked football. Hall was spectacular in seven games before tearing his ACL. Extrapolating his stats over a full season, he would have had 1,190 yards rushing, 560 yards receiving and 13 TDs, placing him seventh in fantasy points for RBs.

GENO SMITH

Chad Pennington Comeback of the Year Award: The only player to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year twice (2006 and 2008), Pennington took Gang Green to the playoffs four times. Smith said he was written off by the media, but he didn’t write back. He finished eighth in the NFL with 4,282 passing yards and a stellar QB rating of 100.9.

Player DEVIN DUVERNAY Sammy Watkins Worst Pickup Award:

Ignored in 2019 fantasy drafts, Sammy exploded with nine receptions,198 yards and three TDs on Opening Day. Owners sprinted to pick him up. In true Sammy style, he didn’t go over 64 yards the rest of the season and never scored again. In an eerily similar fashion, Duvernay surprised Week 1 with 54 yards and two TDs. Betraying the owners that claimed him, Duverney never topped 54 yards again and caught but one more TD pass all year.

KADARIUS TONEY The Will Fuller Fra-gee-lay Major Award:

Will Fuller was more fragee-lay than a plastic leg lamp. Talented yet frail, he never lasted an entire NFL season. He only played twice in 2021 and is out of football. There’s no denying Toney’s talent, but he’s missed all or part of 20 games the last two seasons. Fittingly, he’s questionable for the Super Bowl with an ankle injury.

PLAYERS I PROMISED MY MOM I WOULD NEVER DRAFT AGAIN

Kenny Golladay, Mecole Hardman, Darrell Henderson, Robbie Anderson, Kyle Pitts, Courtland Sutton, Julio Jones, Gabe Davis, and Kenny Golladay. (I wrote Golladay twice to be double sure).

BEST FANTASY TEAM NAME AWARD

Our Seminary Football League (OSFL) is comprised of preachers across the U.S. It’s the only Fantasy league where cursing is frowned upon. Congrats to my friend Pastor Jim (aka Fuzzy), who won it all this year. He has a gosh darn good team name: The Fuzzy Zealots.

SUPER BOWL GIDDY UPS & WHOA DOWNS

Patrick Mahomes vs. Jalen Hurts: The Eagles padded their defensive stats against lesser QBs: Davis Mills, Matt Ryan, Andy Dalton, Ryan Tannehill, the 49er MASH unit, etc. But they didn’t fare as well against superior passers. Dak Prescott defeated Philly with 347 yards and three TDs in Week 16. This bodes well for Mahomes, who should better his AFC Championship numbers (326 yards, two TDs). The Chiefs kept Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence in check with one TD pass apiece, but Hurts will do damage with his legs. I see 60 yards rushing, 200 yards passing and three total TDs for Hurts.

Miles Sanders/Kenneth Gainwell vs. Jerick McKinnon/Isiah Pacheco: The 49ers held Eagles RBs to 3.5 yards per carry and the Chiefs shut down Joe Mixon (19 yards) in their respective champ games. Behind their superior offensive line, Sanders and Gainwell should pound out a combined 120 yards and a TD. The Eagles gave up a healthy 5.5 yards per carry their last three games, but have been stout against receiving RBs, limiting McKinnon’s upside. Pacheco can carve out 55 yards and a TD.

A.J. Brown/DeVonta Smith vs. JuJu Smith-Schuster/Marquez Valdes-Scantling: The Eagles have the better talent at WR, but the Chiefs have the better passer. Mahomes spreads the ball around so much, Chief WRs are not in play for me in DFS. The Chiefs haven’t given up 100 yards to any receiver since November, and only three TDs in the last six weeks. Brown and Smith should combine for 145 yards and a TD.

Travis Kelce vs. Dallas Goedert: Kelce had a ridiculous 21 catches for 176 yards and 3 TDs his last two games. Philly will be lucky to keep him under 90 yards a TD or two. Goedert is no slouch. TEs have had success against K.C. Five catches for 60 yards and a TD are well within reach.

FEARLESS PREDICTION:
