Sharpton leads Florida protest vs. Ron nixing AP Black history

- BY DAVE GOLDINER

The Rev. Al Sharpton led a march on Wednesday on Florida’s state capitol to protest Gov. Ron DeSantis’s decision to bar schools from teaching an advanced African-American studies course.

The veteran New York civil rights leader joined clergy members from across the Sunshine State in the rally that demanded DeSantis and his Republican allies stop interfering in teaching Black history.

Sharpton (photo) denounced DeSantis as a divisive “baby Trump” in a fiery speech to hundreds of demonstrators.

“This is about fighting to tell all of our stories,” Sharpton said.

DeSantis, who trumpets himself as a proud conservative culture warrior, pushed for passage of the so-called Stop WOKE Act that bars Florida schools from teaching uncomfortable messages about societal racism.

The state Department of Education moved to scrap the AP Black studies class saying it was not historically accurate.

Florida schools have also been forced to comb through library shelves to yank books that supposedly include unfair depictions of white privilege or struggles against racism, which DeSantis says are mostly in the distant past.

Fearing reprisals from the state, school officials even briefly pulled books about the struggles of Puerto Rican baseball star Roberto Clemente and outspoken slugger Hank Aaron.

DeSantis says the bans of seemingly innocuous books are politically motivated efforts to derail what he calls his effort to protect kids from progressive brainwashing.

He vows to make Florida a bastion of conservative values and to root out controversial debates about race and gender identity as he considers mounting a 2024 presidential bid against former President Donald Trump.
