BROOKLYN CHARTER SCHOOL: Where we are building bridges to tomorrow.

-

Brooklyn Charter School (BCS) is a proud community of educators, scholars, families, and friends committed to excellence in education, serving the Brooklyn community for over 20 years. Recognized as one of the pioneers of the charter school world, BCS is the first charter school in Bedford-Stuyvesant and the first charter school of the New York City Department of Education.

At Brooklyn Charter School, we anchor core values that grow and enrich the whole child in a nurturing culture that feels like a family. BCS believes that every child has the ability to learn and therefore deserves the best opportunities to excel in school and in life. We bring this vision to reality through our rigorous academic program coupled with our premier arts and technology classes.

BCS students participate in Dance, Music, and Technology classes on a weekly rotating schedule. These classes are an opportunity for students to develop inherent skills, define their identity based on individual talents, and encompass projects and experiences that connect them to the world outside of Brooklyn Charter. BCS also offers art, health, physical education classes, and other electives during the school day to enhance the learning experience for our children.

As an educational institution, we understand the shifts that have occurred in this ever-changing world, and we continue to adapt and adjust our practices in order to ensure that every scholar that enters & exits our learning environment is equipped with the necessary tools to succeed at BCS and beyond.

Enrichment & Extra-Curricular Activities

While it’s true that it takes a village to raise a child, BCS believes that it takes exposure to the world to educate a child. We are an independent charter school that offers a premier extended day program with clubs that introduce children to skills based on their personal interests. From homework help to sports to creative arts, we offer clubs that build upon our children’s innate talents and curiosities. We want our students to understand that while it is important to be academically astute, nurturing an inner gift through exposure can help sustain their love of learning and ultimately build upon their futures.

Safe & Family-Oriented Culture

Building confidence as a foundation for committed effort and learning is our secret sauce to fostering a safe and positive culture. Intrinsic motivation becomes the norm when children operate in environments infused with positivity and accountability. Through the BCS Cornerstones and BCS Affirmations, We have created an environment where students take pride in themselves and their daily actions. Simply stated, “BCS is the school that our students call home.”

Free Qualified School Bus Transportation

Brooklyn Charter School works with the New York City Department of Education and remains one of the only charter schools to provide the option of yellow bus transportation for families in several neighborhoods (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Flatbush, Crown Heights, and East New York). Most of our yellow buses are equipped with trained bus matrons to ensure a safe, orderly, and efficient ride to-and-from school. Based on bus stop availability (Visit www.brooklyncharter.org for all available yellow bus stops), students eligible for transportation may receive either yellow bus service OR a student MetroCard.

Notable Accomplishments

Brooklyn Charter School received a Citation from Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in May 2017, acknowledging the school as being the first elementary school to receive its charter by the New York City Department of Education.

BCS was also recognized by New York City Community Board 3’s Education & Youth Committee for “BedStuy’s Best” as the Most Improved K-8 school in Bedford Stuyvesant.
