Fordham tops La Salle to move on in A-10 tourney

Darius Quisenberr­y scored 22 points to lift Fordham over La Salle, 69-61, Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.

Quisenberr­y also contribute­d six rebounds for the Rams (25-7). Khalid Moore scored 20 points while shooting 6 for 14 (2 for 5 from 3-point range) and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line. Will Richardson was 4 of 7 shooting (2 for 4 from distance) to finish with 10 points.

The Explorers (15-19) were led by Khalil Brantley, who finished with 18 points and seven assists.

OHTANI LIFTS JAPAN IN WBC

Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run double off the left-field wall, allowed one hit over four innings and got the win, leading Japan over China, 8-1, on Thursday night in its opener at the World Baseball Classic.

The Angels two-way star, struck out five and walked none in the Group B game at the Tokyo Dome. His fourth-inning double off Weiyi Wang gave Japan a 3-0 lead.

Ohtani retired his first 10 batters before Weiyi Wang’s single in the fourth. Ohtani threw 32 of 49 pitches for strikes.

In the other Group B game, Robbie Perkins and Robert Glendinnin­g hit three-run homers to lead Australia over South Korea, 8-7. In Group A, Xander Bogaerts and Jurickson Profar homered as the Netherland­s beat Panama, 3-1, and Italy beat Cuba, 6-3, behind Nicky Lopez’s two-run single that capped a four-run 10th inning.

NO CHARGES FOR KEMP

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp acted in self-defense when he exchanged gunfire in a Tacoma parking lot while trying to retrieve a stolen cell phone and other items, his attorneys said Thursday.

Kemp, 53, was arrested by Tacoma police Wednesday for investigat­ion of a drive-by shooting but was released from jail Thursday afternoon without charges having been filed. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office said it would not file charges pending further investigat­ion.

HARPER HOPES TO BE BACK BY BREAK

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper joined his teammates at spring training and hasn’t ruled out being back by the All-Star break following Tommy John surgery.

“Things can change either way,” the twotime National League MVP Harper said Thursday.

“I could be after, I could be before. But as right now that’s the date we kind of solidified. We’re not going to rush. We’re going to be smart about it.”
