Ex-Jets Berrios, Feeney latch on with Dolphins

- BY ANTWAN STALEY

Former Jets quarterback Mike White agreed to a contract with the Dolphins earlier this week. Now some of his former Gang Green teammates will join him.

According to league sources, the Dolphins will sign former Jets wide receiver and returner Braxton Berrios. ESPN reports Berrios’ deal will be for one year.

Miami is also signing veteran guard Dan Feeney to a one-year deal, according to multiple sources

Berrios has spent the last four seasons with the Jets after the team claimed him off waivers. During that time, Berrios played in 65 games for the green and white. He caught 107 passes for 1,085 yards (10.1 yards per catch) and five touchdowns.

Berrios was a significant factor as a returner for the Jets, notching 24.9 yards per kickoff return and 11.4 yards per punt return. In 2021, Berrios averaged 30.4 per kickoff return, which was a

league high. He also averaged 13.4 yards per punt return and was a special-teams first-team All-Pro.

However, in 2022, Berrios’ number dropped slightly to 23.1 yards per kickoff return and 11.4 on punt returns. He also struggled with muffed returns and missed assignments offensively.

Following a down year, the Jets wanted to restructure Berrios’ contract, but the two sides could not come to an agreement. That’s when the Jets released Berrios to save $5 million against the salary cap.

Berrios should significantly improve Miami’s special-teams unit. Last season, wide receiver Cedrick Wilson was the Dolphins’ primary punt returner late in the season, averaging 7.5 yards. Running back Raheem Mostert handled kickoffs, averaging 20.1 yards per return.

Feeney spent the last two seasons with the Jets after four seasons with the Chargers. During that time, he played in 33 games for the Jets, registering five starts in 2021 and two in 2022.

Feeney received more playing time following guard Alijah Vera-Tucker’s season-ending torn triceps injury.
