AARON BOONE SHOULD REMAIN AT THE HELM, JETS NEED BREECE HALL & KADARIUS TONEY IS NOT MISSED…

-

Aaron Boone should keep his job, and not just because the Yankees have won some games lately. He is still the only Yankee manager to have won 100 games in each of his first two seasons, and he won 99 last season.

He has made it to the American League Championship Series twice before losing to the Astros, the same as Joe Girardi did before Brian Cashman thought Boone was the one to take them back to the World Series.

The Yankees haven’t done that, perhaps you’ve noticed. I know Yankee fans have. One of the reasons is that they’ve never been better than the Astros and aren’t now, that sweep at Minute Maid Park last weekend notwithstanding.

Boone has done what he’s done here with one legit starter, with Giancarlo Stanton missing more than 300 games as a Yankee, with Aaron Judge missing a ton himself. Boone manages this team. But it’s sure not his.

It is the product of Cashman and another team, the one constituted by an army of people in the analytics department.

Boone isn’t the one who signed Carlos Rodon for $160 million, or came into the season without a left fielder or a lefthanded power bat other than the one that formerly belonged to Anthony Rizzo.

Boone is just the one who’s taken it all this season, and handled things about as well as you can in tough circumstances in the big, bad city.

He ought to get another year just because of that alone.

The old jazz man Dizzy Gillespie is the one who once said that the professional is the one who can do it again.

• Starting Sunday night against the Cowboys, Brian Daboll gets to show that he can do it again.

• Tommy Tuberville was a hack college football coach and somehow has become even more of a hack as a

United States Senator. Which is saying plenty. l The Jets very much need for Breece Hall to once again be a big player for them this season.

• Ernie Accorsi on Giants GM Joe Schoen:

“His handling of the situation with Saquon Barkley was a master class from a sports executive, even if he benefitted greatly from the kid having the character he does.”

• If I’m Travis Kelce, I’m demanding a raise.

• One more thing about that Thursday night opener between the Chiefs and the Lions:

Maybe the Giants don’t miss

Kadarius Toney as much as he thinks they do.

• Ben Shelton only made it as far as the semis at the Open this year.

But he will be the next American man to win a major, wait and see.

By the way?

It was a boneheaded decision by the United States Tennis Association not to entirely close the roof the other day despite brutal heat and humidity.

At the Open, they remain great at one thing above all others:

Charging so much for tickets fans must wonder sometimes if they broke a window once they got on the grounds.
