HOW TO MAKE YOUR JOB “GREEN”
Many people are waking up to the impacts of the climate crisis and want to do something about it. However, they must also pay their bills and put food on the table for their families. Unfortunately, there aren’t the clearest pathways available for building or transitioning a career to be more environmentally /socially impact-driven. So, how do we bridge the gap?
Kristy Drutman is the co-CEO of Green Jobs Board. This end-to-end career platform empowers all job-seekers with the education and tools needed to build impactful careers that solve the climate crisis. The Green Jobs Board creates accessible pathways and conversations that enable trust, transparency, and inclusion between their community of job seekers and employers.
Drutman initially created Green Jobs Board as a curated series on Instagram due to her frustrations as a recent college graduate who struggled to find a job in the climate space upon finishing her dual degree in Urban Studies and Society and Environment from UC Berkeley. She identified huge gaps in accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity in the climate sector.
According to LinkedIn, only 1 in 8 workers possess the skills necessary to land a “green” job. Despite the sector growing, people don’t know about these opportunities or how to gain the expertise necessary to build a long-term green-sector career. This is a major issue as the world continues to work to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming. We need to lower the barrier to entry so that more workers can find good-paying jobs and long-term career ladders in the clean energy transition.
As a response, Drutman began gathering and curating resources online to make it easier for job seekers, especially Gen Z, to find and apply to values-aligned non-profits and climate tech companies. This organically led to building a community of over 100,000 online members actively using Green Jobs Board to search for opportunities to enter or shift into the climate space. It also allows employers to connect with a diverse, eager pool of candidates directly.
For employers looking to promote their sustainable jobs, it is worth submitting to this platform to recruit diverse, high-quality talent for your organization. Green Jobs Board is reaching people at all levels and with varied career interests to work in the climate space. Their goal is not just to be a job board but also to provide education and information about how to start a green career journey or transition.
