21. See The Man Who Sold His Skin
Oscar nominated. In select theaters.
Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania’s chilling drama follows a Syrian refugee who meets up with a Belgian provocateur who tattoos a visa onto the man’s back and effectively turns him into a piece of art that, unlike a person, can easily cross borders. No, really! Lots to talk about in this one— even if the symbolism can be heavy-handed, it’s never less than thoroughly involving.
