5. See Stono
Let the drums speak.
New Victory Theater, April 22 to May 8.
Step Afrika!, the Washington, D.C., troupe dedicated to the stepping dance form, returns with Jakari Sherman’s Stono, a dance retelling of the 1739 Stono Rebellion, the largest uprising of enslaved Africans in British North America. Step Afrika! performs both the percussive step rhythms used on HBCU campuses and traditional African styles, blending them to create a thrilling, deeprooted dance theater.
