Brass exodus of Nassau cops looms

As many as 100 highlevel cops have put in their retirement papers with the Nassau County Police Department — taking the cash-strapped county up on a sweetheart deal.

Officials hope the move will save $20 million a year in salary and benefits — although the cops have the short-term option of yanking back the paperwork.

The potential exodus from the 2,426-person police force was demoralizi­ng to many cops who worry about the loss of so many experience­d officers.

“Morale is real low, and now they’re looking to get rid of senior guys with experience,” a Nassau cop told The Post.

In a bid to encourage the wave of retirement­s, the cops were offered an extra $1,000 for each year on the force — although it’s unclear if they would get a lump sum, a source said.

But that deal first requires the blessing of county legislator­s, who will vote on the $50 million retirement initiative on March 19.

A county police source said, “If you’re asking me are people disgruntle­d and thinking about retiring? The answer is yes. They are looking for 100 people to go, but I’m not sure they will get that many.

“If the initiative doesn’t go through, they’re not going to have nearly as many.”
