NY’S Anti-jobs ‘Culture’
I agree with Abby Wisse Schachter that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is only too willing to sacrifice jobs for green ideology (“Cuomo’s Yogurt Test,” PostOpinion, Aug. 20).
However, her statement that “New York has never rolled back any environmental regulation” is actually not true.
As the former administrator of the US St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, I fought for years with the DEC to eliminate regulations that would have effectively shut down the Seaway and the 79,000 jobs that depend on it, many of which were located in upstate New York.
The Cuomo administration, to its credit, repealed those regulations early this year.
New York still has a long way to go to demonstrate that it is jobfriendly, but the sensible regulation of fracking, yogurt and cow dung would certainly help improve its reputation. Collister Johnson Alexandria, Va.
New York needs to take advantage of those popular yogurt companies’ desire to expand their production into this state.
The benefits are jobs and taxable revenue — two things of which we are in dire need.
Cuomo should fight for the relaxation of regulations that prevent upstate farmers from expanding their dairy cattle herds so that they can meet the demand of the interested yogurt dairies.
The additional cow manure would also be a resource, because it can be processed into fertilizer and fuel, rather than running off into our rivers and streams. Stanley M. Rubin Kew Gardens
