Collins fumes after latest lackluster loss

If they can’t beat the Rockies, there’s always the Astros. If that doesn’t pan out for the Mets, maybe they can get a bestofseven series going against the Newark Bears.

Good teams, bad teams and all comers are once again turning the Mets into a punch line.

Last night it was the hapless Rockies that made manager Terry Collins’ crew look awful, as poor fundamentals helped send the Mets to a 62 loss in front of 27,633 at Citi Field.

Collins, who was ejected in the fifth inning, addressed his team and made it clear the Mets’ recent play has been unacceptable.

“I don’t think we’re a bad team — we’re just playing very bad right now,” David Wright said after the Mets’ third straight loss and sixth in eight games.

Collins’ grievances included a botched rundown play between third base and home plate in the ninth inning that allowed Andrew Brown to score the game’s final run. On the play, Bobby Parnell was late covering the plate.

The manager was later asked if the Mets have packed it in for the season.

“We have not packed it in,” Collins said. “But as I told our guys, in our game, perception is reality. When you sit on the outside and watch a game like tonight, the perception is, ‘They packed it in.’ And I won’t stand for it. I believe in accountability. I believe in how you play the game right. I’m the manager here and when you have a game like that when it looks like they’re not prepared, that’s my fault.”

The Mets (5766) lost for the 12th time in 14 games at home since the AllStar break and have been outscored 8640 in the process. So maybe the Mets should lobby to play those games against the Newark Bears on the road.

Matt Harvey, who has been maybe the Mets’ only bright spot in this second half, will try to end the team’s losing streak when he faces Jeff Francis tonight.

Chris Young (37) took a perfect game into the sixth last night, only to surrender consecutive hits and then have his evening disintegrate beginning with his wild throw to first on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Collins was ejected for the third time this season following an argument with third base umpire Fieldin Culbreath in the fifth. Andres Torres was caught off second base in a rundown and originally ruled safe diving back into the bag, before the call was reversed. Collins snapped, leaving the reins to bench coach Bob Geren. Replays showed Torres was tagged out.

“I certainly support the process — get the call right,” Collins said. “But as I look back over [123] games we’ve played, we haven’t gotten one of those yet. I’m getting a little tired of it. I got a little fed up with it.”
