METS NOTES

-

“I actually get more work done,” Bay said before the Mets’ 62 loss to the Rockies last night at Citi Field. “If I’m not playing, I can get extra work done. It is different, obviously, but I feel like I’m learning.”

Bay is batting .151 with six homers and 13 RBIs in 152 atbats this season. Since the Mets returned from San Diego on Aug. 7, he has been relegated to playing against lefty starters. For the month, he was batting just .114.

The $66 million left fielder said he’s adjusting to pinchhitting duty.

“I’ve had to kind of tone it down a little bit — I’m wearing myself down trying to get ready,” he said. “If you get moving for four innings straight it kind of wears you down a little bit. That’s kind of been the hardest part, reading the game and when you might or might not get in there.”

Lefty reliever Robert Carson was recalled from TripleA Buffalo, as the Mets placed Jeremy Hefner on paternity leave. Hefner and his wife, Sarah, are expecting their second child.

Manager Terry Collins said he hoped to get Carson into the game to see what he could do against the Rockies’ lefty hitters. Collins got that chance and put Carson into the game in the eighth, but he struggled, allowing one run and two hits in onethird of an inning.

“The more times we run him out there, the better idea we’ll have about him,” Collins said.

Dillon Gee is scheduled to have his right arm examined on Friday in St. Louis and could be cleared to begin throwing next week. But it remains unlikely Gee, who underwent surgery last month after a blood clot was dissolved in his shoulder, will pitch again this season.
