Kickback scandal rocks 92nd Street Y
The 92nd Street Y on the Upper East Side has fired several workers implicated in a kickback scandal, it was revealed yesterday.
An internal probe discovered that one employee accepted payments from 92Y vendors, and several others knew about it and failed to act. They’ve all been fired, 92Y said in a memo sent to staffers.
“Earlier this year, 92Y received an anonymous letter alleging that one of our managerial employees in the Facilities Department had . . . received improper payments from 92Y vendors,” said a memo provided to The Post. “[An] investigation produced evidence that the employee . . . had engaged in improper conduct,” the memo added.
“92Y is taking appropriate steps, including the termination of several employees who . . . failed to report improper conduct.” The memo does not identify who was fired, but said lawenforcement was notified.
At the same time, longtime 92Y director Sol Adler has been placed on medical leave, sources said. A 92Y spokesman declined to com ment on what connection Adler’s exit may have had to the scandal.
“Sol is definitely on sick leave,” an insider said. “This can’t be good.”
The 92Y is one of the largest and most highly regarded Jewish cultural institutions in the nation.
