Hall-most famous: Pirates fight, but can’t upend Creighton

A desperatio­n heave out of Fuquan Edwin’s hands bounced off the backboard at the buzzer, as Seton Hall game fell just short in a hardfought game, falling to No. 11 Creighton, 7271 in Omaha, Neb., on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

Doug McDermott had 29 points to become one of the top10 scorers in college basketball history, and Creighton survived shaky freethrow shooting at the end to post the gritty victory.

Edwin had 21 points to lead the Pirates (1413, 59 Big East), who have lost four of five.

Grant Gibbs added a seasonhigh 16 points for the Bluejays (234, 132), who took a halfgame lead over Villanova in the Big East standings.

Creighton missed five of its last six free throws, allowing Seton Hall to stay in the game to the end. McDermott, an 89 percent foul shooter, missed two before Austin Chatman fouled Edwin on the other end. Edwin made both free throws to make it a onepoint game with 8.2 seconds left.

Wragge missed two free throws with 4 seconds left, but Edwin’s desperatio­n 3pointer bounded off the backboard.

SMU 64, Connecticu­t 55

In Storrs, Conn., SMU added a quality road win to its already solid NCAA tournament résumé.

Nic Moore each scored 15 points to lead the Mustangs (226, 114 American Athletic Conference) past No. 21 UConn and a sweep of their season series with the Huskies.

Markus Kennedy had 13 points and seven rebounds for SMU, which has won 11 of its past 13 games.

Michigan 79, Michigan State 70

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Nik Stauskas scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half, and No. 20 Michigan topped No. 13 Michigan State to take over first place in the Big Ten.

Caris LeVert added 23 points for the Wolverines (197, 113 Big Ten), who won both regularsea­son meetings against their instate rivals. Michigan has now won six of its last eight against Michigan State (226, 114).

Iona 86, Marist 67

In Poughkeeps­ie, David Laury and A.J. English both scored 22 points to lead Iona over Marist, earning the Gaels at least a share of the MAAC regularsea­son crown.

Iona (198, 162) used a 3311 run to take a 7756 lead with 5:46 to go, and Marist (1117, 810) never challenged from there.

Stony Brook 83, Maine 79

In Bangor, Maine, Carson Puriefoy scored 24 points as Stony Brook held off a late rally to beat Maine (521, 311 Am. East).

Stony Brook (208, 122) maintained its place one game behind Vermont atop the America East Conference standings, with a a firstplace showdown game at Burlington on Thursday.
