NFL: Ball has appendicit­is

Broncos starting running back Montee Ball is sidelined with appendicit­is and isn’t expected back until the AFC champs’ opener against the Colts on Sept. 7. Bears secondyear wide receiver Marquess Wilson is out indefinite­ly after breaking his collarbone.

MLB: Cain done for season

Giants pitcher Matt Cain will have seasonendi­ng surgery next week to remove bone chips in his right elbow. Manager Bruce Bochy said “it was inevitable” Cain would have surgery. Bochy said after Monday’s 43 win over the Mets that Cain would have the operation and look forward to getting ready for spring training. Cain, 29, was 27 with a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts.

The Rangers added outfielder­first baseman Mike Carp to their 25man roster. Catcher Chris Gimenez was placed on the paternity list, where he can be up to three days. Carp hit .198 with nine RBIs in 42 games this season for the Red Sox.

NBA: Poll: Ohioans forgive LeBron

A new poll says Ohioans by a wide margin forgive LeBron James for leaving for the Heat in 2010 and overwhelmi­ngly approve of the Cavaliers’ decision to sign him to a twoyear contract.

The poll released by Quinnipiac University says Ohio adults forgive the Akron native by a margin of 62 percent to 12 percent. And they approve of the Cavs resigning him, by a margin of 63 percent to 10 percent.

NHL: Trottier hired as a Sabres coach

Bryan Trottier was hired as an assistant coach for the Sabres. The former Islanders star forward and Hockey Hall of Famer spent part of the 200203 season as head coach of the Rangers.

TENNIS: Israel Open canceled

The ATP tour canceled the inaugural Israel Open in Tel Aviv because of security concerns “arising from the military conflict in the region.” The tournament was set to be held Sept. 1521.
