Plan of attack on Bam’s desk

-

WASHINGTON — The military has given President Obama a plan for airstrikes on Islamic State “safe havens in Syria,” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday.

Forces could hit the extremist group’s “command and control, logistics capabilities and infrastructure” once the strategy is approved, Hagel (inset) told the House Armed Services Committee.

While Obama hasn’t yet signed off on the plan, Hagel predicted he will.

The defense secretary outlined “a three-front” battle that would be waged by Syrian rebels, Kurds and Iraq security forces.

The president’s plans got a huge boost Thursday night when the Senate approved legislation that would allow him to arm Syrian rebels, voting 7322 in favor of the plan. The vote broke party lines, as some Democrats opposed sending arms to Syria while some Republicans backed the president’s plans.

The House had already approved the measure on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, French President François Hollande said Thursday that his country will join the United States in using air power against the Sunni militants in Iraq, but not in Syria.

“In a National Security Council meeting this morning, I gave authorization to respond favorably to Iraq’s request” for airstrikes, Hollande said at a news conference in Paris. “I won’t go beyond that. There will be no troops on the ground, and we’ll only intervene in Iraq.”

Obama, too, has said he won’t send US troops into combat. Bloomberg News
