‘WIfe’ as she knoWs It

Post exclusive: Margulies on Season 6

- By ROBERT RORKE

I n the final scenes of the “Good Wife” season finale, campaign strategist Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) asked Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) if she would run for Illinois State’s Attorney. “What?” Alicia asked, in disbelief. no, of course not.

Season 6, which debuts Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. on CBS, picks up minutes later, with Eli persuading Alicia to see things his way.

“You could win,” he says. “You’re St. Alicia.”

She’s hardly that, as loyal “Good Wife” viewers well know, but this may be the year that Alicia really beats her low-life husband, the governor (Chris noth), at his own game.

Margulies, who just won a second Emmy for her role as the circumspectyet-clever attorney after a killer season, will not confirm Alicia’s candidacy, but says, as if wanting to drop helpful hints, “I hope she does. But she’s very conflicted. Her whole life turned upside down because of her husband’s life ini politics and she hates the glare of thhe public light in her private life. Whhat she went through withh Peter affected her life in a negative way, but she wouldn’tw have found herselff if not for that scandal. Shhe takes her role as a womaan more seriously.”

The blasted Florrrick marria snarling union of conveniencc Alicia’s albatross annd her en the corridors of poower.

“It’s like making your b devil,” Margulies teells Th long as Peter is govverno a power couple. Dooors her. She’s the goverrnor That gives her a platfo stand on. Is that a tradt for happiness? I knnow of sad, successful peop

There’s a man waiw the wings, it wouldd s if Alicia ever decidde wants a real chancee now that Will Garddn (Josh Charles) is deea and buried. Finn Pool (Matthew Goode),, w was the prosecuting attorney in the courtroom the day Will was murdered, crosses legal paths with Alicia again. In a teasing Season 6 trailer they even have drinks together. Loyal viewers want to know: is he the one?

“He seems to understand where she’s coming from,” she says. “There’s a safety there with him. But Peter is going to throw her some curve balls. Alicia certainly can’t be the one who’s jumping into someone’s arms. She’s got respect from the audience and the [other] characters. In order to retain that, she has to go about it in a different way. When it comes to romance, there’s this flirtation with Finn, but we have to remember that Peter is a thinking, feeling man who needs attention and the way [creators Robert and Michelle King] handle it is truly brilliant t.”

Flush with h the critical success of Season 5, Ma argulies admits she was nervous abou ut going on with Season 6 because she e knew the show could not top itself; f; moreover, she told the Kings they sh houldn’t even try to. And o we have Diane D Lockhart (Christine ranski) joi ning the firm Alicia startyear ago o with Cary Agos (Matt hry), bu ut offering an even more ng sce enario: the possibility of the ccountry’s largest firm run n. AArrivederci, Cary? thaat she’s against Cary,” ayays. “She just doesn’t like gh school ideas about siness. It was Diane who r. It’s a great juxtaposin commerce and good rprising storyline that onfirms, starting with t’s premiere, is the nd imposing presence Bishop (Mike Colter), ug dealer represented irm who’s more n he’s worth (and he’s ). Oh my God,” Mars. “Can’t you tell by y costume designer him? It will be an intertoryline and it will be w burn.” argulies also confirms t this will not be the how’s last season, even if AAlicia is elected to office. “Robert’s always said he hhas seven years in him. I wwill stay as long as Robert andd Michelle can write for me.. I’m never bored and we got such a great rush from lastt season.”
