Adding Grilli to bullpen not in Cashman’s plans

- By GEORGE A. KING III

The Yankees have not said they are done adding pieces to a revamped bullpen, but it doesn’t appear veteran reliever Jason Grilli will be joining the cast.

“We talked to Cash [Brian Cashman], and he said ‘not at the moment,’ ’’ said the pitcher’s agent, former slugger Gary Sheffield , when asked if the Yan - kees were interested in the right-handed Grilli, who has 50 career saves. “We will sit back with the offers we have and wait.’’

Referencing the 38-yearold Grilli’s ability to pitch in multiple roles, Sheffield is puzzled why the Seton Hall product isn’t in the Yankees’ plans. He saved 33 games in 201 3 when he was an All-Star for the P irates, and 12 this past season when he split time between the Pirates and Angels.

“I don’t see a reason why he isn’t a fit ,’’ Sheffield said. “He can close and pitch the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.’’

When the Yankees signed lefty Andrew Miller to a four-year, $36 million deal and didn’t make an offer to David Robertson (who fled to the White Sox for four years and $46 million), it created a vacancy in the closer’s role.

Despite the financial commitment to Miller, Cashman hasn’t anointed the 29-year old as Robertson’s replacement. Nor has Dellin Betances, coming off one of the best years ever for a rookie reliever, been handed the job.

As currently constructed — with the belief Adam Warren remains part of the bullpen instead of starting or being dealt — the Yankees have a solid pen with lefty Justin Wilson being acquired from the Pirates and right-hander Shawn Kelley returning.

Still, Miller and Betances have two big league saves between them. Kelley has four; Warren three.

In addition to Grilli, Rafael Soriano is a freeagent reliever with plenty of closing experience. The 34-year-old, who pitched fo r the Yankees in 2011 and 2012, has 207 career saves.

Right-hander Brian Wilson, who is owed $9.5 million for next season and will be 32 in March, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers. Wilson, known for a thick and long black beard, has 172 career saves (mostly for the Giants) but just two since 2011.

Sergio Romo, who turns 32 in early March and has 78 career saves, came off the market Wednesday when he agreed to return to the World Series champion Giants on a two-year, $15 million contract.
