Quarantine doc quits NBC

MONTHS after violating an Ebola quarantine to gett taketakeou­t, Dr. Nancy Snyderman is stepping down as chief medimedica­l editor at NBC News, she announced Thursday. Snyderman, who covered the Ebola outbreak in West Africa late last year and worked briefly with the cameraman who caught the virus, had voluntaril­y agreed to quarantine herself for 21 days in early October, but was spotted in a carar getting takeout just three days later from a New Jersey restaurant. “It is now time for me to return to my roots, so I am stepping down from my position as chief medical editor at NBC News,” Snyderman said in a statement. “Covering the Ebola epidemic last fall in Liberia, and then becoming part of the story upon my return to o the US, contribute­d to my decision that now is the time to return to academic medicine.” Snyderman said she would join the faculty at an unnamed “major US medical school.” She added of her nine years at NBC, “Every moment has been an honor.” She returned from her Ebola quarantine to the 30 Rock airwaves in early December, when she said, “I’m very sorry for not only scaring g my community and the country, but adding to the confusion.” While NBC execs had insisted they wanted her to return, the quarantine queen’s popularity with viewers was damaged. When, on Feb. 22, she gave a faltering ng report on a treatment for peanut allergies, viewers speculated on Twitter about her personal state. An NBC rep ep praised Snyderman, “[She] has provided her expertise on countless health and medical topics that are vitally important to our audience . . . we wish her all the best.”
