Giants D in need of leader after another captain walks away

- Paul.schwartz@nypost.com

played at middle linebacker. Beason last season was on the field for just four games, and his leadership impact crumbled along with his playing time. Beason is coming off foot surgery and had to take a pay cut (his $3.6 million salary was slashed to $1.9 million) to stay on the roster. Maybe Beason heals up and replaces rolle, his former University of Miami teammate, as defensive captain. or maybe Beason cannot shake his injury history (the past four years, he has played in 24 games and missed 40) and as a result is muted.

Any other takers? the best players are Jason Pierre-Paul and Dominique rodgersCromartie, but neither is suited for this. JPP tries, but he is much better as a sidekick, more like Buddy Pine’s “Syndrome’’ (minus the evil) than Mr. Incredible. DrC is somewhat of a lone wolf after kicking around the league (four teams in the past five years), and it will be interesting to see how he deals with rolle’s absence — considering the two are close from their days together with the Cardinals and rolle was quite protective of DrC last season.

Jameel McClain had a solid first year with the Giants, but it is a stretch to catapult him into a captaincy role. Maturing Prince Amukamara is now out of rolle’s shadow and all dried off from that coldtub dumping — let’s see what he has got entering his fifth season.

Sentiment and the salary cap do not mix, and reese never will be accused of keeping guys around too long. When the Giants in 2015 cry out “o captain! My captain!’’ will there be anyone out there to answer?
