Masters champ Spieth tied for Colonial lead

- Associated Press

Masters champion Jordan Spieth made a 20foot birdie putt with darkness falling for a 6under 64 and a share of the firstround lead Thursday in the raindelayed Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

Spieth just missed the green on his approach at the 18th hole, and putted from off the back right fringe. The closing birdie shortly after 8 p.m. put him atop the leaderboard with Kevin Na, Boo Weekley and Ryo Ishikawa.

After missing the cut at The Players Championship two weeks ago, the 21yearold Spieth is playing the first of consecutive weeks at home in North Texas.

Spieth opened his bogeyfree round with a 25foot birdie putt at No. 1, then started the back nine with another a 22footer at No. 10. He had a great chance for another birdie on the par3 16th, but his 4foot try slid by the hole.

BMW PGA

In Virginia Water, England, defending champion Rory McIlroy shot a 1under 71, leaving him four shots behind clubhouse leader Robert Karlsson at the BMW PGA Championship after a mixed performance he blamed on mental fatigue.

Playing for the fourth straight week, the topranked McIlroy failed to recapture the form that saw him surge to a record sevenshot victory at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow last week.

McIlroy had two birdies and two bogeys in his first five holes, missing at 12foot putt for par at the first hole after failing to find the green with his approach. He went birdiebogeybirdie from Nos. 1214, and could not take advantage of par5s on the final two holes.

Karlsson made six birdies for a round of 67. Karlsson was one shot ahead of four players — Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jorge Campillo, Chris Wood and Y.E. Yang.

Senior PGA

In French Lick, Ind., Massy Kuramoto had the only underpar round with a 1under 71 to take the firstround lead in the Senior PGA Championship in damp conditions on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort.

Kuramoto had a onestroke lead over defending champion Colin Montgomerie, Billy Andrade, Barry Lane, Jean Francois Remesy and Bart Bryant.
