Rikers guard slammed me: lady inmate, 77

- Josh Saul

A Rikers Island correction officer broke both arms of an elderly inmate when she tossed her to the floor for throwing a paper cup— then lied to investigators that the 106pound woman fell down by herself, a federal lawsuit charges.

Margaret “MJ” Norwick, 77, had recently returned from Elmhurst Hospital after suffering a heart attack when Correction Officer Charlene Rosado attacked her on March 18, 2014, the suit claims.

Rosado shoved Norwick when the inmate became agitated over not receiving any heart medication, according to Manhattan federal court papers.

“Without any warning of her intent to use extreme physical force, CO Rosado suddenly and violently pushed Norwick to the ground,” the suit says.

“DOC investigators reviewed video footage of the incident, describing that: In one motion, CO Rosado turns to inmate Norwick and appears to, with both hands, forcefully shove her at her shoulders straight down onto her back.”

Rosado then filled out a report saying Norwick fell “of her own accord,” according to the lawsuit.

The Department of Correction declined to comment.
