NY Muslim claims bias

- Julia Marsh

A Muslim security guard is suing his employer for $ 4.5 million, saying that when he was booted from his post at auction house Sotheby’s because of his religious beliefs, the security company did nothing to defend him.

Zakher Hamad, of Brooklyn, told employer Andrews International that he “worked in lawenforcement in Palestine” during his job interview, according to the Manhattan Supreme Court suit.

Andrews hired Hamad in May 2014 and posted the 44yearold guard to Sotheby’s.

But at the auction house, other Andrews employees allegedly harassed Hamad, telling him, “the best Arab is a dead Arab.”

When Sotheby’s security director learned Hamad was Palestinian, he allegedly dumped him. Then Andrews turned a blind eye to the bias, telling Hamad, “We like you, but we can’t lose the contract with Sotheby’s,” the suit says.

An Andrews attorney told The Post Hamad had “performancerelated issues that arose during his employment.”

A Sotheby’s spokesman said the auction house “does not condone harassment or discrimination in the workplace.”
