$ 1M theft from boss, says DA

- Rebecca Rosenberg

A Manhattan bookkeeper stole more than $ 1 million from his boss and spent it on jewelry and vacations because he claimed he never got a raise and had to cope with a difficult coworker, authorities said Wednesday at his Manhattan arraignment.

Christopher Myles, 45, began his alleged plunder after the president of Central Park Realty, Lorenza De Azcarraga, suffered a stroke that left her in a coma.

He spent $ 300,000 on jewelry from Tiffany and Co. and Swarovski, and more than $ 200,000 on a home in Buffalo, where he lives with his mother, prosecutors said.

After De Azcarraga died in 2012, Myles allegedly provided her family with altered bank statements.

When he left his job in 2013, the bookkeeper who replaced him discovered bogus paperwork and alerted the victim’s family, court papers say.

After her heirs conducted a thorough audit exposing the alleged theft, Myles made a bizarre admission.

“Mr. Myles wrote . . . he took the money because he was entitled to it for lack of raises and some nonsense he felt he had to deal with from a coworker,” said Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Lisa Zito.

Myles pleaded not guilty to counts that included grand larceny and tax fraud, for not reporting the loot to the IRS.
