Selig sold us bill of goods with interleague

-

WAS THERE ever a “Great Idea Whose Time Has Come” to fade faster than interleague baseball?

Pitched by “Bottom Line” Bud Selig as “a gift to the fans,” it actually was a shortterm gift to team owners, who hiked ticket prices for such games.

But where are all those who banged the drums, and derided “traditionalists” as shortsighted when they were foresighted?

How can network shotcallers be so wrong about so many of us, their nochoice viewers?

What does Fox, as per every network these days, think that we think when we see five or six panelists at the start of a halftime or postgame show from the Women’s World Cup or any other sport?

Do these decisionmakers think we can’t wait to hear a discussion in which everyone gets to speak one sentence and the sounds of forced laughter? Do they by now think that we have been conditioned to expect any better?

Yet they all copy from the same feckless plan. Why does no network even try to stand out for doing it differently, for doing it better?

Great news for Fox! Magnanimous Mike Francesa on Tuesday said that he sorta, kinda understands Fox Sports 1’s decision to preempt his show, Thursday and Friday, to show the nation the U.S. Open.

Francesa said that given the times FS1 has preempted his show for programming that no one watches, he can live with this one.

Minutes earlier, Francesa said he has noticed a warmer, friendlier Tiger Woods since his game has entered the cutline zone. Francesa said that for better or worse, he likes this kind of public Woods better than the rude, condescending one. Yeah, Mike Francesa said that!

That’s why, along with texting while driving, listening to Francesa while driving should be illegal: It’s dangerous.

Better late than never it’s time SNY got into the fundamental reporting business. Tuesday during the Blue JaysMets game, SNY sent it to studio man Doug Williams, who reported that Brock Holt had become the first Red Sox to hit for cycle “since 1996.” Over and out.

Basic training tells us that he should have reported, “since John Valentin did it in 1996.” A nit pick? Not about a sports network, it’s not.
