Rookie out of reach for Rangers
The Rangers were always regarded as a long shot in the Mike Reilly Derby, but the club was notified by his camp on Wednesday it has no shot to sign the collegiate freeagent defenseman out of Minnesota, The Post has learned.
Reilly, selected 98th overall by Columbus in the 2011 entry draft, met with the Blueshirts at the scouting combine in Buffalo two weeks ago, but the mobile, offenseminded 21yearold notified management he will be going elsewhere. He is believed to have trimmed his original nineteam list to three, with Chicago, Minnesota (where his father is a minority owner) and Los Angeles remaining in contention.
The Rangers’ six regular defensemen are all under contract for next season, and though there is a chance either righty Kevin Klein or lefty Keith Yandle could be dangled as trade bait going into next weekend’s entry draft in Florida, Reilly did not have a clear path to a 201516 roster spot on Broadway.
The Post has confirmed the club will extend a qualifying offer to impending restricted free agent Dylan McIlrath, the 10thoverall selection in 2010 who made considerable progress last season with the AHL Wolf Pack. The Blueshirts are also interested in resigning seventh defenseman Matt Hunwick, who is an impending unrestricted free agent.
The Rangers are not currently scheduled to pick higher than 60th in the draft after having sent their firstrounder to Tampa Bay as part of the Ryan CallahanMartin St. Louis transaction, but the Blueshirts are likely to obtain a higher pick than that as part of a deal for backup goaltender Cam Talbot.
